Department of Civil Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi traces its origin to 1949, when it was established as the Department of Civil and Municipal Engineering under the erstwhile Banaras Engineering College (BENCO), a constituent of Banaras Hindu University. The formal approval for the creation of the department was granted by the Visitor of the University in 1956, and the B.Sc. Engineering degree in Civil and Municipal Engineering received recognition from the Government of India in 1958. In 1975, the department was renamed as the Department of Civil Engineering.

Academic Programmes
- B.Tech.
Admission to the B.Tech. programme in Civil Engineering is offered through the prestigious Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced), conducted annually by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The undergraduate programme provides comprehensive coverage of major domains of Civil Engineering, including Structural Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Environmental Engineering.
In addition to strong theoretical foundations and extensive laboratory-based learning, the curriculum emphasizes project-based learning, enabling students to gain practical exposure to real-world civil engineering problems and their solutions. Students are also encouraged to participate in activities designed for personality development, creativity, leadership, and character building.
- Integrated Dual Degree (IDD)
The Integrated Dual Degree (IDD) programme in Civil Engineering was introduced in the academic session 2005–06 for students interested in pursuing advanced studies and research. This five-year programme is specifically designed for students aspiring to build careers in research and development.
Initially offered only in Structural Engineering, the programme was later expanded from the academic session 2019–20 to include Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, and Transportation Engineering specializations. Admission to the IDD programme is offered through JEE (Advanced).
Upon successful completion of the programme, students are awarded both a B.Tech. degree and an M.Tech. degree in Civil Engineering.
- M.Tech.
The Department of Civil Engineering offers M.Tech. programmes in Structural Engineering, Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Geo-informatics, and Geosciences Engineering.
Admission is offered to GATE-qualified as well as sponsored candidates through departmental screening tests and counselling, as per institute norms. In addition to academic and research training, students are provided opportunities for technical, professional, and overall personality development through participation in institute activities.
- Ph.D.
The Department is actively engaged in advanced research across a wide range of Civil Engineering disciplines. The Ph.D. programme is designed to provide rigorous research training with a high degree of specialization
Admissions are offered under various categories including full-time, part-time, sponsored, and project staff categories (as per institute rules). Ph.D. scholars work under the guidance of experienced faculty members and undertake original research leading to their doctoral thesis.
In addition to research activities, Ph.D. students are also involved in teaching assistantships, which help develop their teaching skills and academic leadership.
