Programmes

  • B.Tech.
  • The B. Tech. Programme in Chemical Engineering at IIT (BHU) Varanasi offers a comprehensive curriculum that equips students with a strong foundation in chemical engineering principles and applications. With a rigorous academic environment and state-of-the-art facilities, the Programme nurtures students to become skilled professionals in the field. Each year, approximately 170 students successfully graduate from the Chemical Engineering department, having gained in-depth knowledge and practical experience through theoretical courses and hands-on training. The B. Tech. Programme in Chemical Engineering at IIT (BHU) Varanasi offers specialization in various streams focusing on Energy, Transport processes, Reaction Engineering and Catalysis; students gain a deep understanding of these core areas. Admissions to the Programme take place annually in July through the Joint Entrance Examination-Main (JEE-Main) and Joint Entrance Examination-Advanced (JEE-Advanced) conducted on a national level in April and May by CBSE and IITs, respectively. Eligibility requires a pass in the final examination of the 10+2 system or its equivalent. For more detailed admission procedures, interested candidates can visit the JEE-Advanced Website before the end of December preceding the year of admission.
  • M.Tech
  • The M.Tech. Programme at IIT (BHU) Varanasi offers an enriching and research-oriented experience for approximately 60 students annually. This four-semester Programme comprises a curriculum with a minimum of 10 courses, including four mandatory core courses spread across the two semesters. Students have the flexibility to choose six elective courses aligned with their specific interests. Students embark on research activities upon completing the coursework, dedicating the summer and the subsequent two semesters to their master's thesis. A seamless transition from the master's Programme to doctoral studies within the department is facilitated. Admissions to the M. Tech. Programmes occur during the summer, typically in April-May. The institute publishes a notification on its webpage, encompassing all departments. Admission to the M. Tech. Programme is based solely on GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) scores—detailed M. Tech. Programme eligibility criteria are in the PG manual of IIT (BHU) Varanasi.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
  • The Ph. D. Programme in Chemical Engineering at IIT (BHU) Varanasi offers a stimulating research environment for aspiring scholars. Admissions to the Programme occur twice an academic year, usually in May and December, with detailed eligibility criteria and notifications on the institute's webpage. The selection process begins with the shortlisting of candidates by a selection committee, followed by a written test covering various subjects within chemical engineering and engineering mathematics. Candidates who score above the predetermined cutoff are invited for interviews, typically held the following day, for final selection. Upon completion of coursework, which typically spans up to one semester, Ph.D. students engage in research activities focused on a specific problem of their interest under the guidance of a faculty mentor or mentors. This extended research period, lasting for 3-4 years, offers a unique experience that fosters the development of scientific temperament and enhances technical communication skills—successful completion of the Ph. D. Programme often entails publishing more than two research papers in reputable peer-reviewed journals, further enriching the student's academic journey. Detailed eligibility conditions for all Ph. D. admissions can be found in the PG manual of IIT (BHU) Varanasi.
