Research interests in Tissue Engineering and Biomicrofluidics (TEBM) Laboratory forge multidisciplinary teams covering expertise ranging from core engineering and biomaterials discovery to the in-depth understanding of human physiological systems. The primary research areas include the recreation of three-dimensional (3D) tissue constructs and functional entities of complex organs, biomaterial scaffolds, 3D bioprinting, Stem cells, biocompatibility assessment and characterization of micro-engineered tissue reconstructs, and testing of their physiological compatibility upon implantation in the animal models. In addition, we focus on integrating microfluidics technology with tissue engineering and implementing them in fabricating on-chip tissue and organ models. Fabrication of biomedical microelectromechanical systems (Bio-MEMs) and lab-on-a-chip platforms for low-cost point-of-care diagnostics (POCD) and biosensor development is one of our major goals.

Ongoing Research(s):

  1. Development of microfluidic tools for neuromuscular synaptogenesis and nanotoxicological studies.
  2. Skeletal muscle tissue engineering.
  3. Corneal tissue engineering for the fabrication of physiological-level functional implants.
  4. Three-dimensional bioprinting of physiologically-relevant functional tissues.
  5. Development and characterization of optically sensitive mammalian cells for tissue engineering applications.
  6. Design and development of microfluidics-based point of care diagnostic (POCD) devices.
  7. Fabrication of tissue-engineered 3D scaffolds.

Research Outcome (till date):

The lab has successfully established primary culture conditions of a number of cells, including embryonic cortical and spinal neurons, corneal epithelial and fibroblast, hepatocytes, and skeletal muscle-specific stem cells. In addition, the lab routinely performs culturing of a variety of secondary cell lines to meet the deliverables of the research projects. Furthermore, we have designed and fabricated a variety of microfluidic platforms, in particular, concerning microfluidic models of neuromuscular junctions, neural tissue arrays, and liver sinusoids. Also, our research efforts have delivered an array of physiologically equivalent tissue-engineered three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds. Recently, TEBM lab has established a custom-designed automated 3D bioprinting system and fabricated a prototype of physiologically functional 3D skeletal muscle tissues.

Lab Facilities:

Cell culture facilities: biosafety cabinet, CO2 incubator, ultra-low -80oC freezer.
Microscopy facilities: Inverted DIC and Fluorescence microscope.
Microfluidics-related facilities: Spin coater, Tensile testing machine, syringe pump, LCR meter.
