I am working as a Professor in the Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), India. Before joining IIT (BHU) on 1st January 2014, I worked as a Scientist at ARIES, Nainital from 2008-2013. I also worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant at Armagh Observatory, United Kingdom in 2007. I have done my Ph.D. in 2006 from the Department of Applied Physics, ITBHU.   I am pursuing research mainly related to the multi-wavelength observations and modeling of transient events (e.g., spicules, various jets, reconnection events), eruptive phenomena (e.g., solar flares and associated plasma processes), and MHD waves & Seismology in the Sun's atmosphere using recent space- and ground-based observatories (e.g., from different instruments onboard Hinode, STEREO, SDO, IRIS, SST etc) as well as theoretical modeling. I also pursue the study of large-scale active region dynamics to understand the role of instabilities and flux-rope evolution in flare and CME eruptions, which is key to space weather predictions. Moreover, I am also involved in the research of stellar flares and MHD seismology of stellar coronae of Sun-like stars. Recently, I aimed to study the observations of various kinds of MHD waves in a variety of small/large-scale magnetic structures (e.g., BPs, networks, coronal loops, prominence, small-scale flowing structures, etc) to diagnose their local plasma conditions and to study the MHD mode coupling in the solar atmosphere. I am also studying the solar jets and spicules and modeling these spectacular ejecta to understand their triggering mechanisms and their role in mass and energy transport in the solar atmosphere. The recent trends of the observations of MHD waves and their role in accelerating/heating the transient phenomena and diagnosing the solar atmosphere are now the frontiers in solar physics and also serve as the theme of my research. For the last several years we have devoted ourselves to understanding the physical processes that can heat the Sun's corona and chromosphere (e.g., waves, instabilities, the forced magnetic reconnection, shocks/pseudo-shocks).  I am involved extensively in the teaching and training of B.Tech Part One, IDD Engineering Physics, M.Sc., and Ph.D. students, and also engaged in various administrative tasks assigned by the institute. I am also involved in the science team of Aditya-L1 instruments, and various global research networks and collaborations. Currently, I envision an exclusive idea of the "Symbiosis of WAves and Reconnection (SWAR)" in plasmas at diverse scales, and extensive works are ongoing on this aspect..

Council, IIT (BHU) in May 2019.

(iii) Yamini K. Rao is selected in the Heliophysics Summer School in Boulder USA, 2019 under NASA Living with a Star Program. She availed full financial support of travel and local expanses.

(ix) After completing Ph.D. in 2020, Dr. Ritika Solanki joined as an Assistant Professor at Department of Physics, School of Sciences, CSJMU, Kanpur.

(x) UG project students, Mr Kushagra Sharma and Mr. Abhinav Prasad were selected in summer internship with grant support to work at KU Leuven, Belgium in summer 2020.

(xi) IDD/M.Tech project student, Mr. Abhinav Prasad has published 03 lead author papers in peer-reviewed Solar Physics journal (Springer, I.F: - 2.671).

(xii) Mr. Abhinav Prasad has been granted a SOLARNET International Project under European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under Grant Agreement No. 824135 in 2021.

(xiii) In the Master's project, Mr. Kushagra Sharma has developed a basic structure of the python-based MHD code PyFUMER, and he has co-authored scientific papers.

(xvi) Ph.D. student Mr. SRIPAN Mondal has been granted by prestigious PMRF (Prime Minister Research Fellowship) in 2022 for the five years. His PMRF project is to understand the novel role of magnetic reconnection in the heating and dynamical processes of the Sun's magnetized atmosphere.

(xvii) IDD Project Student Ms. Anshika Singh has been granted a full scholarship of Mitacs Globalink Research Internship to work on the modeling of  plasma at University of Saskatchewan, Canada in 2023.

Some Exclusive Research Highlights:- 

[1]  On Modeling the Spicule-like Cool Jets Driven by Alfven Pulses [2022]:-  

Spicule-like jets are the recurrent plasma ejecta transporting energy and mass and coupling the different layers of the Sun's atmosphere. Their origin is still a mystery. There are several mechanisms proposed for their generation in the solar atmosphere. Quasi-periodic spicule-like cool jets are found to be driven by Alfvén pulses. The scientists from Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi demonstrated using the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model that multiple velocity pulses between 1.5 and 2.0 Mm in the solar atmosphere trigger the initial transverse velocity perturbations. These pulses transfer energy non-linearly to the field aligned perturbations due to the ponderomotive force. This physical process further creates the magnetoacoustic shocks followed by quasi-periodic plasma motions in the solar atmosphere. The field aligned magnetoacoustic shocks move upward which subsequently cause quasi-periodic rise and fall of the chromospheric plasma into the overlying corona as a thin and cool spicule-like jets. The magnitude of the initial applied transverse velocity pulses are taken in the range of 50-90 km/s . These pulses are found to be strong enough to generate the spicule-like jets. They analyze the evolution, kinematics and energetics of these spicule-like jets, and find that the transported mass flux and kinetic energy density are substantial in the localized solar-corona. These mass motions generate in situ quasi-periodic oscillations on the scale of ≃ 4.0 min above the transition region. [2]  First Direct Detection of Forced Magnetic Reconnection in the Large-scale Sun's Corona (2019):-

While the Sun’s jumble of magnetic field lines are invisible, they nonetheless affect the material around them — a soup of ultra-hot charged particles known as plasma. The scientists from Department of Physics, IIT (BHU) were able to study this plasma using observations from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, looking specifically at a wavelength of light showing particles heated 1-2 million kelvins (1.8-3.6 million F). The observations allowed them to directly detect the forced reconnection event for the first time in the solar corona which they model also— the Sun’s uppermost atmospheric layer. In a series of images taken over an hour, a prominence in the corona could be seen falling back into the photosphere. En route, the prominence ran into a snarl of magnetic field lines, causing them to reconnect in a distinct X shape in the frame-work of "the forced magnetic reconnection". [3]  Confined Pseudoshocks as an Energy Source for Active Region Corona (2018) :-

Scientists from Department of Physics, IIT (BHU) have discovered tadpole-shaped jets coming out of regions with intense magnetic fields on the Sun. Unlike those living on Earth, these “tadpoles” — formally called pseudo-shocks — are made entirely of plasma, the electrically conducting material made of charged particles that account for an estimated 99 percent of the observable universe. The discovery adds a new clue to one of the longest-standing mysteries in astrophysics. The Sun's active corona requires an energy flux of 10^3 W m-2 to compensate for radiative losses and to maintain its high temperature. Plasma moves in the corona through magnetic loops, which may be connected with the flows in and around sunspots. Global energizing processes (for example, reconnection) play an important part in heating the corona; however, energy and mass transport may also occur via shocks, waves or flows. A full picture and the influence of such localized events, which significantly couple with various layers of the solar upper atmosphere, is still not clear. Using the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph temporal image data of C ii 1,330 Å, we observed the presence of pseudo-shocks around a sunspot. Unlike shocks, pseudo-shocks exhibit discontinuities only in the mass density. A two-fluid numerical simulation reproduces such confined pseudo-shocks with rarefied plasma regions lagging behind them. We find that these pseudo-shocks carry an energy of 10^3 W m-2, which is enough to locally power the inner corona and also generate bulk flows ( 10-5 kg m-2 s-1), contributing to the localized mass transport. If they are ubiquitous, such energized and bulky pseudo-shocks above active regions could provide an important contribution to the heating and mass transport in the overlying solar corona.

[4]  High-frequency Torsional Alfvén Waves as an Energy Source for Coronal Heating  (2017):

The existence of the Sun’s hot atmosphere and the solar wind acceleration continues to be an outstanding problem in solar-astrophysics. Although magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes and dissipation of magnetic energy contribute to heating and the mass cycle of the solar atmosphere, yet direct evidence of such processes often generates debate. Ground-based 1-m Swedish Solar Telescope (SST)/CRISP, Hα 6562.8 Å observations reveal, for the first time, the ubiquitous presence of high frequency (~12-42 mHz) torsional motions in thin spicular-type structures in the chromosphere. We detect numerous oscillating flux tubes on 10 June 2014 between 07:17 UT to 08:08 UT in a quiet-Sun field-of-view of 60” × 60” (1” = 725 km). Stringent numerical model shows that these observations resemble torsional Alfvén waves associated with high frequency drivers which contain a huge amount of energy (~105 W m-2) in the chromosphere. Even after partial reflection from the transition region, a significant amount of energy (~103 W m-2) is transferred onto the overlying corona. We find that oscillating tubes serve as substantial sources of Alfvén wave generation that provide sufficient Poynting flux not only to heat the corona but also to originate the supersonic solar wind.

SCS academics has noticed far reaching valuable response, positive impact and response from UG students, and work for the wellness of the UG/PG students.

Role: - Worked as a Convener, DPGC in the Department of Physics, IIT (BHU) during 2018-2020. Stringent Ph.D. student selection process is employed with two step/committee interview process to select the promising Ph.D. students.
