i. The program aims to produce qualified architects as per the requirement of registration with the Council of Architecture (CoA), for license to practice the profession in India. Accordingly, the curriculum is based on the Standards of CoAand is structured for five years divided into two stages: a. The first stage consists of three years (6 semesters) of full-time study followed by practical training in professional offices or at construction sites for 20 weeks (1 semester). b. The second stage consists of one and a half years (3 semesters) of full-time study, where by each student is required to write a research based dissertation, prepare a paper for seminar and present a design thesis along with other compulsory and elective courses.
ii. Students gradually learn through practical work how to evolve an architectural design as a response to at least four, occasionally conflicting, forces that define the context, namely, historical and cultural antecedents, contemporary social aspirations, climate/geography and evolving technologies. iii. Whereas the program will essentially prepare students for a career in mainstream architectural practice in private and public domains, there will be a significant thrust to encourage them to take up other careers in research, academics, journalism, outreach and advocacy which are becoming increasingly relevant and even critical to the continuation of a habitable world as will be progressively defined through the lens of the universally accepted Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
iv. The aim of the program will be to attain a vanguard position in nurturing thought leaders for the way we need to build in the future, in India definitely and perhaps all over the world. They should not only have the creative urge to ideate a better built environment but also develop confidence to experiment and invent technologies to execute those ideas.
v. The pedagogic model shall strive to consciously move away from the personality driven design practice of the past, towards more inclusive and collaborative paradigms which are process-oriented rather than result-oriented, targeting truly disruptive, path- breaking explorations with less weightage given to short-term success or failure..Hide(-)
