Message to Freshers
From Director
Dear students,
Welcome to IIT(BHU)!
IIT(BHU), Varanasi is an institution in transition. Such a transition provides opportunities not otherwise available to other institutions. It has a brand new academic curriculum which weaves research and innovation with flexible course work. The flexibility so provided in the curriculum can be used by the keen learner to his/her advantage. It provides opportunities to students to take up project work at various stages of the undergraduate program. Besides the B.Tech. project in the final year, the student also does an exploratory project in 2nd year. There is also an option to take up stream projects over four semesters in 3rd year and 4th year. Show(+)
The curriculum permits even the undergraduate student to take courses and do research across departments and disciplines. The presence of diverse discipline including biological sciences and engineering, the existence of BHU and large variety of departments provides opportunities, not available anywhere else.
Like previous years, this year also a special event is planned for you, so as to make you comfortable with the campus, learn the culture and ethos of the place, and gear yourself up for professional education. It is the three-week Induction Programme right at the beginning of the semester, from July 25th. You will play games, learn a creative art form (painting, music, dance, clay modelling, etc.), have group discussions, learn about your department and the institute, visit to the historical city, etc. Regular classes will start after the Induction Program.
IIT(BHU) provides an active extra-curricular life with games & sports, culture, science & technology and literature and media. We benefit from the city of Varanasi which is the cultural hub of this region. There are many social and spiritual activities as well, in which students can participate.
Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the founder of BHU, had a vision to create a combination of old and the new, by taking the best of both. That vision remains to be realized in the country today. He was also clear that it could be done only by men and women of character. To move towards that vision, IIT(BHU) has put several elements in place. An important first step is the Universal Human Values course in the first semester during the induction programme. The course is conducted through discussions in small groups, each with a faculty mentor, on issues of life related to self, family, society and nature.
The institution shares the ambience of a University. As a result, there are challenges as well as opportunities. The challenges involve dealing with different types of people and groups, including conflicts at times. These prepare us to face challenges of society in future. In terms of opportunities, location inside the university campus provides for easy access to many different academic disciplines. For example, some courses in Humanities, Social Science and Creative Practices will be taught by faculty members from BHU. The diversity of experience that can be gained here is simply incomparable.
Join here only if you are bold! Be a part of a great institution of the past which is remaking itself, and in the process get transformed yourself!
