It gives me immense pleasure to introduce Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi, an ever-evolving Institute where knowledge meets character, passion joins compassion, tradition adheres to modernity,
and progress accompanies sustainability. Varanasi which was quoted to have been older than history by the great author Mark Twain, itself has been a great seat of learning from the time immemorial.
For over a century, this epicenter of excellence in higher education, which was founded by Bharat-ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya as engineering unit of Banaras Hindu University, the first residential University of the Modern India, has been offering its students/alumni a heap of opportunities, whose innovations have shaped massive industrial growth facilitating civil society and strengthening military warehouses as well.
Over the past century, the Institute has added several chapters of transformations to its journey, since inception as Banaras Engineering College (BENCO) in 1919 with augmentation of College of Mining and Metallurgy (MINMET) in 1923, and College of Chemical Technology in 1932, and their merger as Institute of Technology in 1968 to the current evolution as Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi in 2012. Recent augmentations have been the Departments of Humanistic Studies, Architecture and Planning, and Decision Sciences. The Institute is leading in some engineering disciplines such as Electrical, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Ceramic and Pharmaceutical Engineering in the Country.
The great visionary Mahamana ji envisaged the role of engineering and technology in laying a firm foundation for the independent nation to take off as self-dependent and self-reliant country. Accordingly, the Institute has risen to the occasions with high standards in teaching, research, innovations, and entrepreneurship. A large number of industrial and academic projects are running in the Institute with world class research outputs being given by the faculties and the students. Our presence on the global scientific map tells the real story of our devotion and dedication towards contribution to the service of the Nation as well as the whole humanity.
The Institute has a Central Instrument Facility Centre, Supercomputer “Param Shivay”, the first of its kind under the mission “Make in India”, signed MoUs with several premier institutes and universities from within the country and abroad. Despite the fact that we have embarked on the journey of scientific and technological advancement as a mission to match international standards, the human values are never compromised with. “Education is character” is the doctrine of this Institute. We strive for attaining various goals but not at the cost of values, principles and character building. We have a legacy of hundred years of honoring traditional values and we look forward to preserve the unparallel heritage of our Campus.
Jai Hind!
